The Pazos Fontenla urbanization will incorporate nature-based solutions.

The City Council has already submitted to Augas de Galicia the urbanization project for Avenida de Pazos Fontenla, valued at more than 2.1 million euros. The project includes the replacement of utilities, the integration of nature-based systems, and the renewal of pavements on this regional road, with the aim of improving both urban mobility and environmental quality.

In the current context of climate change, the project is not limited to renovating facilities but proposes a comprehensive review of how urban frameworks function. Pazos Fontenla Street, located in the lower part of the Bueu Valley and at risk of flooding as it receives runoff from the watershed before it reaches Banda do Río Beach, is one of the town’s critical points. To address this situation, the integration of sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS), such as permeable pavements and tree pits, is planned to facilitate natural water infiltration and reduce runoff depth during heavy rainfall events.

The project also responds to the growing public demand for a more inclusive, high-quality public space. Currently, the sidewalks on the south side of the street have sections less than 1.2 meters wide, which hinders universal accessibility. The proposed redevelopment rethinks the street section, its materiality, and the arrangement of services such as loading and unloading, waste management, street furniture, and lighting.

The new section of the road provides for a two-lane, one-way carriageway with each lane 3 meters wide and sidewalks no less than 1.8 meters wide. In addition, a complete renewal of urban services will be undertaken: water supply, sanitation, lighting, and the drainage network.

The proposal, drawn up by the engineering firm Esinpro together with the LANDLAB studio and architect María Fandiño—winners of the Banda do Río ideas competition—will be debated at the municipal plenary session in September thru a joint motion by the BNG and PSOE, in which Augas de Galicia will be asked to co-finance it. At the same time, the Department of Finance is working to bring the procurement of the Master Plan derived from the Ideas Competition, which will guide future actions in the town, to next month’s plenary session as well.
