The Future Waterfront of A Pobra Now Has a Design

The future maritime façade of A Pobra do Caramiñal now has a defined vision. The ideas competition jointly promoted by the Fundación RIA and Marta Ortega Pérez, together with the Concello and the Colexio Oficial de Arquitectos de Galicia (COAG), has selected Beiras da Caramiña, a proposal by María Fandiño and LANDLAB, from among the 15 entries submitted.
According to the jury’s statement, the winning project sets out a delicate and measured intervention, carefully addressing the different working scales while demonstrating clear technical feasibility. The jury particularly highlighted its architectural coherence and its ability to articulate a strong strategic framework for the long-term future of the town’s waterfront.
LANDLAB will now be responsible for drafting the Master Plan for the maritime façade of A Pobra. The scope of the proposal extends across the entire seafront, from the bus station to the San Antonio bridge, with special emphasis on the reformulation of the central area — including the gardens, the port-side parking area, the surroundings of the Fernández Varela school, and the municipal market.
The project also rethinks the spatial organisation required to accommodate the traditional Wednesday open-air market, integrating this weekly civic event into a renewed public realm structure.
One of the aspects most valued by the jury was the proposal’s strategic vision — its capacity to reconcile past and future through a phased implementation process. Rather than imposing a single transformative gesture, Beiras da Caramiña proposes a gradual sequence of interventions, allowing the waterfront to evolve over time while strengthening its identity, continuity, and relationship with the sea.
