Award-Winning Project Combines Ecological Solutions, Flood Protection, and Inclusive Public Spaces on the Besòs Coast

The project Verd i blau: Infraestructures resilients, developed by the temporary consortium formed by LANDLAB, Aldayjover, and the engineering consultancy Aquática, has been awarded first prize in the competition for the Litoral Park of the Tres Chimeneas.

With an innovative approach that turns climate risks into opportunities, LANDLAB’s design envisions an inclusive, ecological public space capable of withstanding both riverine and coastal storms, as recent weather events have highlighted. One of the project’s most notable features is the “sponge berm” promenade, elevated five and a half meters above sea level, acting as an infrastructure to protect against extreme flooding.

The park will cover 89,502 m² between the Tres Chimeneas complex and the beach, including marshlands and areas near the Besòs River delta. The design integrates a Mediterranean pine forest between the coast and the future neighborhood around the former power plant, as well as beach expansion, dunes, lagoons, and nature-based drainage systems, all capable of managing the water cycle and actively protecting against climate change.

The project also includes burying and relocating the Llevant collector, the large sewage pipeline, raising it up to four meters above sea level—a critical step recently approved by the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona.

The competition jury highlighted the design’s capacity to renaturalize the environment, connect the park with new civic routes, balance social uses with the restoration of fluvial, coastal, and urban ecosystems, and create habitats for wildlife. The incorporation of vegetation adapted to the local context was also praised, enhancing biodiversity and increasing the site’s climate resilience.

With an estimated budget of €13.7 million, Verd i blau consolidates LANDLAB’s role as a benchmark in the design of green infrastructures and resilient public spaces, integrating sustainability, innovation, and quality of life along the Besòs coast.
