Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Venice are three European cities whose coastal condition has shaped the lives of their citizens since ancient times. This relationship has been transforming up to the present day and has profoundly influenced all areas of social life, from commerce and the economy to language, art, and architecture. Today, all three must face the often acute effects of climate change. What can we learn from their history that can help address the complexity of the present?

Carola Hein, Francesco Musco, and Miriam García, three experts in the urban history of Amsterdam, Venice, and Barcelona respectively, exchange an analysis on these coastal cities and their past and future relationship with the sea.

This event constitutes the closing act of "The Cities and the Sea," a series of debates that are part of the Cultural Regatta, the program of activities promoted by the Barcelona City Council to accompany the celebration of the America's Cup in the city.
