The Banda do Río master plan will be ready in July

With this master plan, Banda do Río aims to move towards a more accessible, sustainable, and future-ready urban model.
The future of Banda do Río is beginning to take shape. The neighborhood’s master plan will serve as the framework document defining the strategies for its improvement, establishing a roadmap of concrete actions and a timeline for their implementation. Although consultative rather than regulatory in nature, the document will lay the foundations and guiding principles for the measures to be developed in the coming years.
Among its main objectives are the enhancement and revitalization of public spaces, improving their quality and functionality. Key issues such as accessibility, energy efficiency, and building rehabilitation will also be addressed, with the goal of modernizing the urban environment and adapting it to current needs.
Architects María Fandiño and Míriam García (LANDLAB, landscape laboratory) won the ideas competition in November 2024 with their proposal, “Bandas de Ribeira.” The project includes standout initiatives such as the creation of an open-air amphitheater covering approximately 1,000 square meters, the installation of two wooden pergolas next to the Purro shipyard to host small covered events, and the development of sports courts on the beach itself, incorporating measures to improve accessibility.
The proposal also focuses on adapting the area to adverse weather events, particularly heavy rainfall. To this end, it envisages the installation of permeable paving and retention tanks at various points throughout the neighborhood, aiming to reduce flooding and improve water management.
