RIA Life Project
Recovery of the Micedo Marsh in the Ría del Carmen, Cantabria

The objective of the RIA Life project is to develop and implement an innovative approach for the sustainable restoration of estuarine habitats (currently contaminated) along with their associated services. The project designs pilot actions for phytoremediation of water that will lead to the improvement of environmental quality and the waters of degraded riparian natural spaces of the Ría del Carmen and Boo, as well as the planning of their use and management (focused on Monte Parayas and the surroundings of the Trascueto Industrial Park).
The creation of a circulation system for phytodepuration of water, the true driving force of this project, represents an opportunity for the recovery of the spaces associated with the estuary and their public use and enjoyment. In this way, the project is not limited to mere environmental recovery but also includes swimming pools and a solarium area, along with trails and spaces for landscape interpretation. Additionally, a set of complementary facilities and infrastructures necessary for the proper functioning of the project are designed, such as the RIALAB research center, a warehouse that includes workshops, nurseries, and sustainable biomass management infrastructures through composting, as well as historical and environmental dissemination (interpretive routes) that would also be concentrated in Monte Parayas and the surrounding area of the Trascueto Polygon, extending to the Ria del Carmen Park.
