Regenerating the coastline

Designing with nature

LANDLAB’s approach to urban and territorial projects aligns with a growing paradigm shift in Spain: moving from resisting climate change to regenerating natural systems as the primary strategy.

As highlighted in the Climática article, traditional solutions based on rigid infrastructure are increasingly being questioned, giving way to models that return space to nature—such as dunes and dynamic coastal systems—capable of adapting autonomously to climate impacts.

In this context, Miriam García, founding partner of LANDLAB, emphasizes that “climate change adaptation should not be understood as a limitation, but as an opportunity to transform our cities and territories through a more resilient and ecological logic.”

Her perspective aligns with emerging scientific and technical approaches that advocate for relocating infrastructure away from the coastline and restoring natural processes—not as a retreat, but as a more effective response to sea level rise and coastal erosion.

In contrast to the historical model of intensive coastal urbanization, LANDLAB promotes strategies based on green infrastructure, ecological restoration, and adaptive planning. This approach aims to reduce urban vulnerability and strengthen climate resilience, understood as the capacity of systems to adapt, reorganize, and evolve in the face of change.
