Press trip: “Cala Millor decides its future”

Last Thursday, March 19, LANDLAB participated in the press trip "Cala Millor decides its future," held at the Auditori Sa Màniga in Cala Millor, Mallorca. This event brought together journalists, content creators, and key stakeholders with the aim of showcasing on-site the work developed within the framework of the LIFE AdaptCalaMillor project.
During the session, Cala Millor was presented as a true living laboratory of climate adaptation in the Mediterranean, highlighting the special vulnerability of coastal areas to the effects of climate change. Throughout the morning, the project's progress was shared, which combines science, participatory governance, and solution design to address the current and future challenges of urban beaches.
The day placed special emphasis on the importance of social participation and multilevel governance as key elements for defining effective adaptation strategies. In this regard, the collaborative process driven by the project was presented, which has allowed the integration of public administrations, the tourism sector, the scientific community, and citizens in the decision-making process.
Likewise, the main results obtained after more than 20 years of studies on Cala Millor beach were addressed, which have allowed for the construction of a solid scientific basis to analyze the risks associated with climate change, such as coastal regression, the loss of dry beach, the impact of storms, and sea level rise.
As a central part of the day, we took a tour of the coastal front where the diagnosis of the current state of the beach was explained and the various proposed adaptation strategies were presented. Among them, we highlight the retreat of the promenade, the creation of vegetated topographies, the establishment of park berms, and other complementary measures aimed at improving the resilience of the beach-city system.
The meeting also served to share different perspectives of the territory, highlighting how adaptation to climate change not only responds to an urgent need but also opens opportunities to redefine the tourism and territorial model of Cala Millor.
The LIFE AdaptCalaMillor project thus advances in its goal of developing a replicable model of climate change adaptation in urban Mediterranean beaches, based on scientific knowledge, active participation, and cooperation among multiple stakeholders.
