Playa de Palma, finalist in the ARQUITECTURA 2026 Awards

Regenerating a mature tourist destination

by | 14/05/26

The Superior Council of the Colleges of Architects of Spain (CSCAE) has selected the strategic regeneration plan for Playa de Palma among the 25 finalist proposals for the ARQUITECTURA 2026 Awards, one of Spain’s leading recognitions in architecture and urbanism. The project was developed by Victoria Fiol and LANDLAB, landscape laboratory, led by Miriam García and Jordi Miró.

The proposal places LANDLAB at the center of the current debate on how to transform mature tourist destinations facing the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss. In contrast to intensive urban models disconnected from the natural dynamics of the territory, the plan proposes an integrated strategy based on ecological regeneration, urban resilience, and climate adaptation.

The project represents the first phase of a profound transformation process for Playa de Palma towards a model of tourism circularity and climate adaptation. It aims to restore the environmental capacity of the territory through nature-based solutions and more efficient and livable urban systems.

The strategy includes the naturalization of streets and public spaces, the implementation of sustainable urban drainage systems, Mediterranean climate-adapted revegetation, and the creation of a green and blue infrastructure capable of improving the metabolic performance of the urban environment.

In addition to addressing risks related to rising temperatures, flooding, and tourism pressure, the proposal integrates criteria linked to energy, mobility, water, materials, and waste management, building a comprehensive vision of urban sustainability.

Being selected as a finalist reinforces LANDLAB’s trajectory in projects that approach climate adaptation through landscape and ecological urbanism. The studio advocates for an approach that combines territorial innovation, environmental restoration, and quality of life improvement, placing both people and ecosystems at the center of planning.

The CSCAE recognition highlights proposals capable of responding to major contemporary challenges through architecture committed to collective well-being, sustainability, and territorial regeneration. The finalist projects were chosen by a prestigious jury from among 209 proposals previously selected by Spain’s regional Colleges and Councils of Architects. The ARQUITECTURA 2026 Awards ceremony will take place on June 9 at the Teatro Alcázar in Madrid.
