LIFE Adapt Cala Millor Working Group Meeting

Strategies and sub-strategies for adapting to climate change

by | 19/09/25

The LIFE Adapt Cala Millor project is advancing in defining climate change adaptation strategies.

On September 19, a new meeting of the LIFE Adapt Cala Millor project’s Working Group was held at the Sa Màniga Auditorium in Cala Millor. The meeting aimed to advance the collaborative selection and prioritization of climate change adaptation strategies and sub-strategies in this coastal area of Mallorca.

During the session, three main objectives were addressed. First, provide context and present the progress made since the working group’s last meeting, showcasing the evolution of the strategies proposed for Cala Millor based on the contributions from the seventh meeting held on June 12, 2025.

Secondly, the feasibility of the various strategies was evaluated by applying objective criteria from multiple perspectives: physical, environmental, urban, socioeconomic, and administrative. Finally, the participants shared the evaluation results, discussing and reaching consensus on the conclusions drawn from the process.

On behalf of LANDLAB, Miriam García actively participated in the working group. LANDLAB is a partner in the project, which stands out for its innovative approach based on the development of new scientific methodologies and participatory governance schemes, with the aim of improving the understanding of physical processes on urban beaches and anticipating potential changes in their morphology under global climate change scenarios.

The LIFE Adapt Cala Millor project is a local governance initiative aimed at promoting climate change adaptation in both the beach system and the urban environment of Cala Millor Bay. Its purpose is to strengthen the resilience of infrastructure, ecosystem services, and the local economy against long-term climate impacts, thereby establishing Cala Millor as a benchmark for coastal sustainability in the Mediterranean.

This initiative is part of the European LIFE program, one of the European Union’s main funding instruments for environmental, nature, and climate action projects.
