Coastal aquaculture is an activity closely related to the environment and the landscape, so sustainability and respect for the environment must be an inherent condition for its implementation and development.

This guide starts from the recognition of the coastline as an environmental, social, landscape, and productive unit. Its challenge is to help establish a methodological framework of sustainability criteria and landscape integration for the professionals involved in the process of implementing coastal aquaculture establishments.

It is a methodologically complex document and yet easy to handle, so that any interested audience can approach this subject.

Its edition is framed within the scope of the Galician Landscape Strategy, integrating the development of aquaculture into the model proposed by the Territorial Planning Guidelines (DOT), the Coastal Planning Plan (POL), and the Law on the Protection of the Landscape of Galicia.

Experience with aquaculture establishments shows that one of the prominent conflicts they generate is their lack of landscape integration, because coastal aquaculture shares the sustainability challenges with all other human activities. This guide offers the keys to fully addressing the challenge of integrating this task into the environment and landscape of our coasts.

The objective of this guide is established within the European and national framework for the protection, planning, and management of the landscape.
It provides a set of criteria and best practices for the establishment of coastal aquaculture facilities in Galicia. It is a reference guide for all professionals committed to aquaculture and the landscape.
