Green Infrastructure and Urban Regeneration in Bueu

The redevelopment and humanization of Pazos Fontenla Street in Bueu (Galicia) is emerging as a unique and pioneering project in ecological urbanism and green infrastructure. Led by the Concello de Bueu and the Xunta de Galicia, the project has been developed by engineering firm Esinpro and the UTE Fandiño–LANDLAB, headed by architects María Fandiño and Miriam García, winners of the Banda do Río ideas competition.
With an estimated budget of €3.1 million, the project will be executed in phases and incorporates advanced solutions for climate adaptation and sustainable water management. Among its most innovative features are permeable pavements, rain gardens, green planting beds, and climate-adapted street trees—designed not only as landscape elements but as active systems capable of absorbing, infiltrating, and regulating rainwater, thereby reducing runoff and flood risk.
These nature-based solutions are complemented by an overflow system that redirects excess water to a new separated stormwater network, a key measure in an area historically affected by heavy rainfall and overflows from the Bispo River. The project also includes a complete renewal of urban services, with upgraded sanitation, water supply, and drainage networks.
From an urban perspective, the intervention promotes a more livable, people-centered street design, narrowing traffic lanes, widening sidewalks, and creating raised platforms at strategic intersections to calm traffic and reinforce the street’s pedestrian character. Specific treatments are applied at key points along the route, such as the area around the Massó block’s araucaria tree and the cross near Banda do Río housing, integrating heritage, landscape, and everyday use.
Covering approximately one kilometer along the PO-315 regional road—which will be returned to municipal control upon completion—the project sets a benchmark for ecological urban regeneration. Aligned with green infrastructure and climate resilience principles, it highlights LANDLAB’s role in developing urban strategies that integrate landscape, sustainability, and quality of life.
