Banda do Río demands progress on its winning project

Bandas de Ribeira must guide the comprehensive improvement of the neighborhood

Residents of Banda do Río are demanding the master plan.

The Banda do Río Neighborhood Association has expressed its concern over the delay in awarding the contract for the master plan that is to guide the neighborhood’s comprehensive improvement. The “Bandas de Ribeira” project, designed by architects María Fandiño and Miriam García (LANDLAB), won the ideas competition launched by the Bueu City Council in late 2023.

Following the announcement of the ruling, the next step was for the winning team to draft the master plan, a procedure that has yet to be carried out. The last meeting of the monitoring committee was held in November, coinciding with the presentation of the preliminary draft, which had been well received by the neighborhood groups involved. However, nine months later, the association complains that “we were told the master plan would be contracted in May, but it’s August and everything is still the same.”

The collective has submitted a written request to the City Council for the urgent convening of the monitoring committee—comprising neighborhood associations and all political groups with municipal representation—in order to reach consensus on a motion to be subsequently brought before the full council. The neighborhood proposal includes three main demands: the immediate hiring of the team to draft the master plan, the inclusion of an item in the 2025 budget to begin project phases, and the pursuit of external funding thru Portos de Galicia, the Coastal Authority, and European funds such as Next Generation. Although the association recognizes the scale of the project, which comprises four phases and an investment of over five million euros, it insists that immediate steps must be taken to avoid losing funding opportunities. “We are aware that a project of this magnitude cannot be completed in two days, but at the current pace it won’t be finished this millennium,” they quip in their statement, while emphasizing that their stance is “proactive and constructive.” Link here.
